Hey Jags, today I’ll be talking about some small businesses run by current or former students in Georgetown! Supporting small businesses is so important because you’re helping people follow their ambitions, as well as supporting the local economy because it keeps that money within the same region. Typically, small businesses are also more environmentally friendly than other big businesses. Products from these businesses are great as gifts for the holidays, whether it’s a necklace for your best friend, a candle for your mom, or a vintage shirt for your dad. So, here are some that Georgetown students have founded!
Candle It - This is run by grade 12 CTK student Valerie Montini! She makes hand-poured 100% soy candles, and delivers them right to your doorstep. Right now, she has a holiday collection that features scents like Chai Tea Latte, Eucalyptus, and Gingersnap Cookies! Candle It has plenty of different jars and mugs that are completely customizable to fit anyone's needs. Her Instagram, @candle.it_ shows off all of her creations so far, and it shows you great instructions on how to take care of your candles. My mom and I can testify that her candles are amazing, as I got my mom one of Valerie's flower pot candles for Mother's Day, which we both love! She also has an etsy shop at CandleItCA.
Pixiegerms - This is a jewelry and accessory business run by grade 12 GDHS student Isabelle Butterworth. Now, I may be a bit biased since I’ve known her since we were babies, but I love her products so much! She predominantly sells handmade necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, but can also make things like crochet bags, tops, and plushies. Everything you see on her Instagram, @pixiegerms_ is completely customizable and she can make so many different things. I own four pieces of jewelry from her, and I’ve given two as gifts to my friends, and we all love her products. Recently she did a fundraiser selling $10 suicide prevention awareness bracelets where she would donate 50% of the proceeds to the Canadian Mental Health Association, and in the end, she donated over $250! She also has a depop account for orders at Pixiegerms.
INAMINUTE - This is a shop for vintage clothing founded by some former students from Georgetown. They sell vintage, but still trendy, streetwear from popular brands such as Nike and Supreme. Back at the end of 2019, they had a pop-up shop in the Georgetown Marketplace, but I believe they now have a store at 43 Guelph Street, near downtown Georgetown. If you know someone that loves streetwear, then you might find their Christmas present here.
Finally, although this doesn’t really count as a business, grade 12 CTK student Laila Barakat recently released a song! You can now stream Hollywood on all platforms, which is said to have similar vibes to Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo, yet still her own, creative style. I’ve had this song on my playlist since it was released!
Now, I know there are a multitude of other student-run businesses excluded from this article that I have failed to find. There are a few CTK students that sell baked goods, and possibly other things, but I couldn't remember the names of them. Nevertheless, check these businesses out if you’re still looking for a Christmas present for someone, because there's a good chance you could find something for them here! And let me know of any other student-run businesses you know in the comments, and I might be able to make another article with them!
