Community, Creativity, Courage

The role of art in our lives is essential for self expression, communication, and

the enjoyment of aesthetic beauty. We recognize art in our society every day, from

the music we listen to while walking home from school to the graffiti we see

painted on murals outside. For the Indigenous Peoples of Canada, art plays an

important role in sharing culture and tradition, connecting with communities,

telling stories, and so much more.

This is the exact vision of the NWIA organization; to reclaim and strengthen this

cultural and artistic expression from Indigenous women and gender-marginalized

folks in Canada. It is crucial to support and appreciate Indigenous practices when it

comes to customary arts, as it plays a vital role in Indigenous history and traditions

passed down from generations.

What is NWIA?

The Native Women In the Arts is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1993 by

arts leader Sandra Laronde, of the Teme-Augama-Anishe-Naabe. NWIA works to

promote and develop Indigenous artists from communities across Canada and

internationally.

What Does the NWIA Do?

- Supports emerging Indigenous artists

- Promotes mid-career and established artists

- Educates through public presentations across Northern Ontario

- Organizes various community-strengthening events

- Continues to recognize Indigenous culture and traditions through festivals

and gatherings in Toronto

What Can We Do?

It is important to support local Indigenous artists in Canada. As most of the NWIA

projects take place in Toronto, ensure that you stay up-to-date with any upcoming

events by reading and checking out their website! http://www.nwia.ca/

In addition to this, the NWIA is a registered charity! You can contribute by:

1. Donating online via Canada Helps

2. Donating by money order by mailing to:

Native Women in the Arts

208 – 180 Shaw Street

Toronto, Ontario

We must recognize and appreciate the lives of Indigenous Peoples in Canada, and

supporting this amazing non-profit organization is one of the many ways we can

get involved and do so!
