How to be Successful This Semester

By: Maya McRoberts

High school can be hard. It can be something you don't even want to think about sometimes. I've felt the same way. Over the last three years of being at Christ the King, these three tips have helped me so much this semester, since starting to use them!

So, here are my top three tips that I enjoy using to make myself feel more prepared and successful for each class this semester!

Having a Calendar or To-Do list

I have a calendar hanging in my room, and a to-do list on my laptop, too! By having a calendar, especially a physical one, I can plan school assignments and study periods ahead of time, and just keeps me more organized in order to know what I have to do when. I am very much someone who enjoys visually seeing what they have to do, instead of keeping it in my head. Also, spreading homework or assignments apart from one another can relieve pressure, giving you less to do in one day. The to-do list on my laptop is for day-to-day tasks. After each class, I will write any homework in my list so that I can prepare for the class the next day!

Being Prepared for the Next Class

This semester, I tried something new, which was preparing for my classes the night before. After I was done with any homework that day after school, I would write down my next lessons in my notebooks, or take any pre-lesson jot notes or questions I had. I found this very helpful for my more fast paced classes this semester, because I can just listen and focus on the teacher, instead of trying to keep up with writing the lesson or activity, while listening. This also allowed for more in time class to do any homework, instead of trying to finish the note. Also, by reading and taking notes on any PowerPoints the night before, I managed to start to understand what topic we were about to learn the next day, so it wasn't completely new to me the day we fully reviewed the lesson.

Keeping up with Homework, Getting the Help You Need, and Taking Breaks

I know sometimes you may be exhausted, or you have to work that night, or just simply can't do any homework. I have been there, too. But, I can promise you, doing your homework will help you a lot in future classes; a lot of classes build on what you learned in the previous class. So by keeping up with homework, it will help you in the next lesson, and of course on any future quiz or test. Even doing just a little bit of homework is still beneficial! For me, especially in math, I was falling behind, but by getting a tutor, I felt so much more confident, and doing homework took me from 2 hours, to 1 or even 45 minutes! Getting help is nothing to be ashamed of, and even for me, this year in math I got a tutor right away so I wouldn't fall behind at all. I know this can also be stressful a lot of the time, but once you've accomplished something that you think you couldn't, it's a great feeling! Taking breaks in between is good too. Taking breaks from homework is actually shown to have improved people's study habits! Focusing on something for too long, can actually cause someone to focus less, so by taking a five minute break and checking your phone, getting a snack, or going outside, it can help them focus better for longer after that!

Overall, doing these three tips this semester has really taken off a lot of stress for me, and I feel so successful after every test or assignment I've done so far! Hopefully if you try these three tips, they will benefit you, too!
